In June this year, a study was published which focused on a Pakistani woman who was experiencing problems while having sex with her husband. She found that penetration was near impossible and the year-old also had pain in the lower part of her stomach. So, what was wrong? Rest assured that contrary to to its name, a blind vagina does not mean your vagina is fumbling around in the dark, unable to guide a penis through its entrance. It is a condition in which the vaginal canal is very short, which can cause problems during sex, as well as other issues. For women with this condition, the vaginal canal measures around two centimetres — a third of the average length for vaginal canals, which is six centimetres. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, absent or light periods during puberty, and pain during sexual intercourse. The severity of this pain varies from case to case, and a woman might not even know she has a blind vagina until puberty or when she starts having sex or otherwise penetrating her vagina with fingers or sex toys. Having a blind vagina does not only come with physical symptoms; some women also feel ashamed because of their inability to have sex and as is often the case when it comes to vaginal issues, there is a stigma attached to the condition.

A year-old woman in Pakistan reported to her doctors that she was having difficulties having sex with her husband. Having only recently been married and begun having sex, she hadn't noticed any sexual problems before that point. When she attempted to have sex with her husband, penetration wasn't possible. Over the six months of their marriage, her husband began to physically and verbally abuse her for it, and she eventually returned to live with her parents. She had experienced other signs that something was amiss, and told doctors that she had had lower abdominal pain over the past three years, and had never had a period. This had clearly caused her to question what was going on with her body, but her mother had put it down to delayed puberty. An ultrasound showed a normal-sized uterus and seemingly normal ovaries, and results of a hormonal profile were all within normal limits. Upon physical inspection, the problem was identified. The woman had a "blind vagina" of just 2 centimeters 0. She was diagnosed with a transverse vaginal septum, where a horizontal "wall" of tissue formed during embryologic development essentially blocks the vagina.

Some women are born with a rare condition known as 'blind' or 'dead-end vagina' and it can impact their sex lives. When it comes to the female genitals, it seems there is still a lot that we just don't know. Recently we discovered that 'depressed vagina' is a real thing and this week we've learnt that some women have what is known as a 'blind vagina'. No, this doesn't mean that your vagina has issues with sight, but instead that the vaginal canal is short because there is a 'wall' of tissue blocking the vagina. It's a condition that some women are born with and occurs when the reproductive system doesn't develop properly in the womb. The rare condition, also known as 'dead-end vagina', came to light following a piece of research published in the British Medical Journal.
